The Lumpen Proletariat
The lumpen proletariat is that sector of the population that, having been denied a legitimate way to make a living, resorts to the illegitimate: i.e. thieves, fences, drug pushers, numbers men, gamblers, pimps, prostitutes, loan sharks, beggars, thugs, etc…For several years the idea was current among certain sectors of the revolutionary movement that the lumpen proletariat had become the "new vanguard" of the revolution. According to the Black Panther Party, Franz Fanon and others, the lumpen proletariat…were the most impoverished and oppressed and were, therefore, the most revolutionary section of the population.

I once witnessed a mother lift the front end of a full sized car off her child. How do you define heroism? What is in the human spirit that causes a human being to transcend the norm and reach deep within their self an perform heroic acts. Such is the stuff of Sister Sophia Powell.
On Saturday night of the 26th of July, 1970 Carl B. Hampton was mortally wounded by police fire. Carl had been shot in the chest by several dum-dum rounds. The police were on top of a three-story building. Not just any building. It was the St. Thomas Church (MBC) situated on the corner of McGowan and Dowling St. They had strategic advantage. After they shot Carl, they perched on the Building like vultures waiting for Carl to die.
Then a miraculous thing happened. Under the intense fire by the police Sister Sophia drove up to where Carl laid mortally wounded on Dowling St. She physically picked Carl up put him into her vehicle. She took him to Riverside General Hospital. They could do nothing for him.
Sophia then transported Carl to Ben Taub hospital and registered under him under the name of John Sims. It is reported that the doctors attempted to save his life but the wounds were too horrendous. At 2:50am Sunday morning Carl succumbed to the bullets wounds.
How do you define a Heroine? Perhaps we cannot. However, we will tell our children of this great lady. We will sing her song. We will write poetic verse. She will receive her Flowers while she lives. We will sing her song. We will write poetic verse. She will receive her flowers while she lives. We will insure that she is immortalized in history proper. Behold Sophia Powell Van:
